Château du Tertre: A Historical Jewel of Margaux

Château du Tertre , a prestigious Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is one of the oldest and most uniquely situated estates in the Margaux AOC .

The estate’s name, "Tertre," translates to "hillock" or "rising ground," an apt description for its location on one of the highest gravel outcrops in the Médoc. This elevated terroir provides exceptional natural drainage and sun exposure, protecting the vines from frost and ensuring optimal ripeness.

A Legacy of Innovation

The history of the Château is a tapestry of visionary owners. In the 18th century, it was owned by Pierre Mitchell , a prominent Irish glass manufacturer who is credited with creating the first "Jeroboam" bottle. This pioneering spirit in glassmaking makes your acquisition of magnum-sized bottles a fitting tribute to the estate's heritage. In 1997, the estate was revitalized by Eric Albada Jelgersma , whose significant investments restored the property to its former glory, modernizing the gravity-flow winery while preserving its 12th-century soul.

1986 Château du Tertre: The "Iron Fist" Matures

The 1986 vintage is legendary in Bordeaux for its incredible structure, high tannin levels, and immense aging potential. While the wines were famously "austere" and "backwards" in their youth, the passage of four decades—especially in the protective environment of a Magnum —has transformed this wine into a classic masterpiece.

Tasting Notes & Sensory Profile

  • Appearance: A deep garnet core with a graceful amber-brick rim, indicating its noble maturity.
  • Nose: An "old-school" aromatic profile. Expect an evolving bouquet of cedarwood, cigar box, and dried blackcurrants, accented by subtle notes of forest floor (sous-bois), leather, and dried violets.
  • Palate: The "strict" tannins of the '86 vintage have integrated, providing a firm yet silky backbone. It offers a savory complexity with flavors of dark plum, tobacco leaf, and graphite.
  • Finish: Persistent and elegant, with the trademark Margaux minerality and a hint of spice.
