The relationship between Duhart-Milon and Lafite is not just one of ownership—it is one of shared destiny and vineyard adjacency.

  • Ownership and Rebirth: Château Duhart-Milon was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1962, following decades of decline, vineyard fragmentation, and neglect. At the time of purchase, only 17 of its 110 hectares were planted with vines.
  • The Lafite Standard: Since 1962, the Rothschild family has poured massive investment into drainage, uprooting, replanting, and infrastructure. Critically, the estate is managed by the same technical team that oversees Château Lafite Rothschild.
  • Shared DNA: Duhart-Milon's vineyard, which is predominantly a single block, lies immediately to the west of the Lafite vineyard on the Milon hillside, extending the famous Carruades de Lafite plateau. It benefits from the same deep, fine gravel soils that define the finest Pauillacs.
  • Winemaking Process: The Duhart-Milon wines are made using the identical meticulous techniques as Lafite: hand-harvesting, strict control of yields, parcel-by-parcel vinification, and aging in barrels made at the DBR's own Tonnellerie des Domaines cooperage.

Duhart-Milon is often referred to as the "little brother" of Lafite, offering a more approachable and earlier-maturing expression of the same aristocratic Pauillac terroir and winemaking philosophy.

tasting note: The 2005 Vintage (The Benchmark)

The 2005 Duhart-Milon is widely hailed as one of the most successful efforts from the Rothschild team, successfully marrying the intensity of the vintage with the estate's signature finesse.

  • Appearance: Deep, dark, opaque ruby/purple-colored core, with a slight bricking edge developing after two decades of aging.
  • Nose: The bouquet is classic Pauillac —highly aromatic, initially reserved, but opening with notes of graphite/lead pencil shavings, cigar box, and blackcurrant liqueur. These primary aromas are woven together with secondary development notes of Asian plum sauce, tobacco leaf, and a hint of sweet cherry.
  • Palate: It is medium to full-bodied with a wonderful texture, noted for being supple, silky, yet tannic and structured. The fruit is dense, driven by concentrated blackcurrants and sweet cherries. The tannins are fine-grained and substantial, ensuring a long, caressing, and elegant finish that highlights the exceptional balance and freshness of the vintage.

In summary, the 2005 Duhart-Milon is highly regarded because it delivers the power and structure of a great vintage while retaining the elegance and signature graphite/cedar notes expected of a wine managed by the Lafite team. The Magnum format ensures even slower and more graceful evolution, allowing this wine to age magnificently for decades to come.

The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux is legendary, characterized by a long, dry, and warm growing season with cool nights that resulted in grapes of exceptional concentration, purity, and freshness.
